Important — what this calculator does and doesn’t do

  • The rules applied here come from HMRC VAT Notice 735 and section 55A of the Value Added Tax Act 1994. Treat the answer as a starting point, not a substitute for advice from your accountant.
  • End-user and intermediary status must be confirmed by the customer in writing. The calculator assumes you have that notification if you tick the flag.
  • Materials supplied AS PART OF an in-scope construction service go on the reverse-charge invoice together with the labour. Pure materials supplies with no construction work are excluded.
  • Zero-rated supplies (e.g. new-build dwellings) are never reverse-charged.

VAT reverse charge — frequently asked questions

It is an anti-fraud measure that shifts the responsibility for accounting for VAT from the subcontractor (supplier) to the contractor (customer). Instead of the subcontractor charging VAT and paying it to HMRC, the contractor records the VAT on their own VAT return as both output tax and input tax — usually netting to nil. It has applied to most CIS-applicable construction services in the UK since 1 March 2021.
